Questions people ask

Are you a law firm?

No. Car Accident Lawyer Fort Wayne is a free attorney referral service, not a law firm. It gives no legal advice and represents no one. Calls and requests are connected to participating independent attorneys.

Does it cost me anything?

No. Both the call and the written request cost you nothing. Participating attorneys pay to receive calls. Any fee for legal work is agreed between you and the attorney you hire, if you hire one.

Who is on the other end of the line?

The intake team of a participating independent attorney’s office. They do not work for this website.

Do I have to hire anyone?

No. You can talk, ask questions and decide not to hire anyone. You can also call a firm from the directory instead.

Are calls recorded?

Calls through the referral line may be recorded. A short recorded message at the start of the call can tell you so and explain that you are being connected to an independent participating attorney’s office.

Is any directory firm one of the attorneys on the referral line?

No. The directory lists Fort Wayne firms free, from their own public websites and public listings. They do not pay for their listing and are not affiliated with this site or its referral line.

How do you choose which firms appear in the directory?

A firm is listed when its own website shows a Fort Wayne office with a phone for that office and names car, auto, vehicle or truck crash work. The list is grouped by part of town and A to Z inside each group. It is not a ranking.

I run one of the listed firms. How do I correct or remove a listing?

Send a request through the contact form with the firm’s name and the change you need. Corrections and removals are free.

How long do I have after a crash in Indiana?

Indiana law generally gives two years to file a personal injury lawsuit, and two years for damage to a car. The deadline can be shorter or different in some cases: if a city, county or state vehicle or employee was involved, written notice is generally due within 180 days (city, town or county) or 270 days (state). A licensed Indiana attorney can say which applies to you.

What if I was partly at fault for the crash?

Indiana’s general rule is modified comparative fault. If you are found 51 percent or more at fault, you generally cannot recover. If you are 50 percent or less at fault, any amount is generally reduced by your share.

What is the minimum car insurance in Indiana?

The Indiana BMV describes a 25/50/25 minimum: $25,000 for injury to or death of one person, $50,000 for two or more people in one accident, and $25,000 for property damage in one accident.

The other driver had no insurance. What now?

Each newly written Indiana auto liability policy includes uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage unless it was rejected in writing, according to the Indiana Department of Insurance. It lets you collect from your own insurer. Check your policy.

How do I get a copy of my crash report?

You can usually buy a copy of an Indiana police crash report online through BuyCrash, the service the Indiana State Police uses.

Why did the BMV send me a letter after the crash?

When the BMV receives an accident report it may request proof of insurance. Your insurer must file a Certificate of Compliance, and it must be received and processed by the BMV within 90 days of the BMV’s mailing, or driving privileges are suspended.

How do lawyers charge for car accident cases?

Each attorney sets their own terms. Indiana’s professional conduct rules require any contingency fee agreement to be written and signed by the client, and the agreement must explain how the fee is figured and which expenses you owe either way. Ask before you sign.

Do you take calls about truck, motorcycle and pedestrian crashes?

Yes. The referral line takes calls about road crashes of all kinds in Fort Wayne and Allen County: cars, trucks, motorcycles, pedestrians, cyclists, passengers and bus riders.
